BTFC Advisory Panel Member 2005-Present

Paul Kleihues received his medical degree from the University of Münster ( Germany) in 1962 and his medical license two years later.

Since 1964, he has pursued his interest in neuropathology and cancer research through various academic posts in Cologne, Freiburg and Zurich, including an 18-year stretch as the Professor of Neuropathology at the University of Zurich. From 1990 to 1992 he was Dean of the University of Zurich Medical School. His research focuses on the pathology and genetics of tumours of the nervous system. Between 1994 and 2003, he was the Director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Lyon ( France) and edited the third edition of the WHO Classification of Tumours. In October 2004 he became Founding Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Freiburg ( Germany). In 2005/2006 he was Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin. From September 2006 to March 2007 Dr. Kleihues was Visiting Scientist in the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) of the National Cancer Institute (NIH/NCI); his main project was the creation of an online database that provides basic information on all human cancers.

Dr. Kleihues has extensive editorial experience, was Founding Editor of Brain Pathology , and is currently Senior Editor of Clinical Cancer Research. He received various awards, including the Clinical Research Award of the Federation of European Cancer Societies, an Honorary Membership of the European Society of Pathology and of the International Society of Neuropathology and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Lodz ( Poland).
